The Adaptive Environments Lab is a trans-disciplinary initiative at UVA — Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Medicine, Public Health, Environmental Science — built on one observation: generative AI has just moved expert environmental-design capability from specialist teams to anyone who can ask a good question. Every designed place changes after it's built. Our tools have treated places as frozen; we design for places that adapt — and that produce new knowledge as they do. The designer's role shifts from author to orchestrator, working alongside computational systems, ecological processes, and communities.

Observational intelligence

Design decisions emerge from sustained attention to how environments actually perform — sensing across scales and seasons, processed with machine intelligence.

Micro-scale adaptation

Not large interventions that lock in assumptions — small, continuously informed adjustments that aggregate into systemic change.

Computational partnership

Simulation and machine learning augment human judgment, never replace it. Design stays accountable to the communities and ecologies it serves.

The teaching lab

We start by teaching it. A teaching chassis: three capture platforms on one corridor — drone + LiDAR by air, 360° cameras by bike, LiDAR + water sensors by canoe — feeding one shared, queryable corpus. Students don't inherit a dataset; they sit down next to a collaborator that has spent all summer learning a place. The pedagogy bets on workflows that survive rapid model change — and on giving students the confidence to engage AI rather than fear it.

First implementation: the Rivanna corridor

The Rivanna River in Charlottesville is implementation #1 — close, ecologically rich, publicly loved. Its corridor intelligence becomes a civic asset: riparian health, species, and flood behavior answered from the same scans as shade, trail access, and health equity. The pattern is built to transfer — next corridors, next campuses, next regions. Everything else in the lab's vision grows from here.
